Hans Pastusz Rohen, an animal behaviorist, award-winning animal behaviorist, created the Talking Dog video. He is a specialist in understanding the psychology of canines and how they utilize complex math to solve problems. His research has earned him many awards, including the 1999 Breakthrough Award by the American Psychological Association (London, England) and the Royal Society of Medicine (London, England).
Von Osten’s book The Talking Dog reveals a bizarre anomaly where dogs can understand the meaning of words , even in the absence of hearing them before. He explained that the reason he came across the talking dog phenomenon was due to the fact that dogs use the same methods of processing as humans when processing information verbally. He discovered that dogs make use of an illusion called the stumpfog. It’s basically an abbreviation for what is commonly referred to as the “illusory hearing system”. This is what allows a normal person to comprehend speech even if they’ve never heard it before.
In The Talking Dog, von osten explains that dogs use the same kind of method that humans use to process the meaning behind spoken words. The key is in their ability to connect certain sounds (like the clicks and snaps in the speech) with a visual image. Dogs use the same connections as humans to interpret the visual information they receive.
To test this, von osten recorded a number of dog sounds. He also asked some dog owners to watch a video of the same sounds being spoken by a person. The owners rated how accurately they were able to comprehend the meaning of the video. These results were astounding The more effort a dog owner made to listen to the sound, the better they believed the speaker. It seems that dogs process video and sound in the same way. In addition, the dogs were able to remember the names of the speakers they heard the sound from!
Von Osten has also written books on talking dogs. The book What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know provides information on the talking dog experiment as well as explanations of the theory. In the book the theory is explained, and the number of buttons or slips that are used are explained. The concept isn’t entirely new, but it is new to dog owners, and many of the details are unfamiliar to me, too. I have seen that other researchers have replicated similar results, however I am not an expert in this field and cannot confirm its validity.
The book isn’t an accurate scientific representation of the Talking Dog phenomenon. However I found it be a fascinating read and recommend it highly. I don’t, however, claim to be a scientist and cannot vouch for the veracity of any of the claims made in this book. I am, however, a very big fan of the idea and am sure that other dog lovers will see this as a fantastic method to learn about the nature of their dog and much like clever Hans canaries can waggle their way through an interview, my dog is able to speak to anyone at any time, by saying whatever comes to the mind. It’s incredible. I am looking to reading more books by the author and perhaps even in his “Dog Whisperer” series.
